CompanyProspect, September 2026

Between January 1 and September 4, 2026, Uber Eats signed **36,932 new restaurants in Japan** and **44,447 in the United States**. That is 83% of the US count, in a country with roughly a third of the population: 124 million people against 340 million.

Per capita, Japan is ahead: 298 new restaurants per million people against 131 in the US, **2.3× as many**.

Month by month, Japan has been catching up. Its cumulative count was 49% of the US figure in January and 82% by the end of August. The step change came in March, when Japan signed 5,018 restaurants against 2,913 in February: the month Wolt ended its service in Japan. Over July and August, Japan added 10,715 while the US added 4,112.

Taiwan, the third market, follows a steadier path and reached 18,135 by the end of August.

02 The competitive backdrop

## Why Japan, and why now?

**Wolt ended its Japanese service in March 2026** ([The Japan Times](https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/02/26/companies/wolt-japan-exit/)). Every restaurant that relied on it had to find another channel, and the timing matches Japan's jump in new Uber Eats restaurants.

**The market is barely growing.** Japan's food delivery market shrank 6.1% in 2024 and recovered just 2% in 2025 ([Crex Data](https://crex-data.com/industry/restaurant/ready-to-eat/food-delivery)). In a flat market, one platform's gains are more likely to come at another's expense than from new demand.

**The field is shifting.** Demae-can, the local incumbent, is forecast to post its eighth consecutive annual net loss, and Coupang's RocketNow entered in 2025, adding another competitor ([Nikkei Asia](https://asia.nikkei.com/business/food-beverage/coupang-s-cost-cutting-rocket-now-shakes-up-japan-s-food-delivery-sector)).

One possible interpretation: consolidation after Wolt's exit is favouring platforms with existing scale. The open question is whether it sticks. Were these forced moves, or will these restaurants stay active and generate repeat orders? Would you bet on Uber Eats holding this pace in Japan through 2027?

04 Restaurant intelligence in practice

## What it means for teams selling to restaurants

### A change in delivery channels is a buying moment.

Every restaurant that switches or adds a platform is re-evaluating its menu, pricing, integrations and suppliers.

For anyone selling to restaurants, Japan in 2026 is likely that opportunity: tens of thousands of restaurants changed channels within months.

### Watch competitive exits.

Japan's jump in March shows how quickly restaurants move when a platform leaves.

An exit is a timing signal for every vendor whose customers depend on that channel.

### Check whether it sticks.

Signing a restaurant is not the same as keeping it active: the test for Uber Eats in Japan is repeat orders through 2027.

Pair new listings with location and ownership data to see which operators moved, and which stay.

## Notes and data sources

How these counts were built.

**Unit**

A new restaurant on Uber Eats: one whose onboarding on the platform is dated between January 1 and September 4, 2026, with coordinates and an active listing. New to Uber Eats, which is not the same as a newly opened restaurant.

**Countries**

33 countries are present; 11 records have no country and are shown as such. No country is suppressed for its size.

**Monthly series**

Restaurants grouped by the month of their onboarding. The chart shows complete months; September 1–4 is partial and left out, so the chart totals 98,715.

**Per capita**

Population of Japan (124 million) and the US (340 million) from the 2024 official estimates of the Statistics Bureau of Japan and the US Census Bureau.

**Treemap**

A round Voronoi treemap: regions contain their countries, and every area is proportional to its count (checked to within 0.1%). Adapted from Will Chase and Kcnarf's examples.
